Mony Ruiz-Velasco

will join the Equality Illinois team as our inaugural Deputy Director

We are excited to announce that Mony Ruiz-Velasco will join the Equality Illinois team as our inaugural Deputy Director beginning July 15th, 2021.

Over the years, we have worked with Mony as both a community partner and a Board member. There are few talents in Illinois so exceptional in building broad coalitions to capture our state’s biggest opportunities as Mony. She is a passionate advocate and attorney, whose work has centered mostly around immigrants’ rights and social justice issues. As an attorney Mony has represented and counseled hundreds of LGBTQ families and asylum seekers who were seeking protection from persecution; she has also worked on legislation that would benefit LGBTQ immigrants at the national level. Mony will be prepared on day one to fight for LGBTQ underserved communities; including pushing for trans equality, supporting queer youth, protecting EI’s wins, and expanding EI’s reach into every community throughout the state.

Hiring Mony is an extension on EI’s commitment to double down on civic engagement. By hiring such an experienced community leader, EI plans to strengthen our works growing the organizing and civic muscle of LGBTQ people and LGBTQ community groups throughout the state, from Pilsen to Peoria, from Waukegan to Washington County.

EI’s staff and board look forward to working with Mony Ruiz-Velasco in this significant leadership role to continue advancing justice in Illinois.
