Equality Illinois Congratulates President-Elect Joe Biden And Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris On Their Presumptive Win Of The Election

A statement from Brian C. Johnson, CEO of Equality Illinois, the state’s civil rights organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) Illinoisans:

“While we wait for every vote to be counted, we are incredibly thrilled with the votes that have come in. We congratulate President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President- elect Kamala Harris for winning the election. President-elect Biden has worked tirelessly to advance LGBTQ equality, from the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ to his historic declaration in support of marriage equality.

We would also like to extend a special congratulation to Vice President- elect Kamala Harris for her historic candidacy and victory as the first women, the first Black woman, and first Asian American to be elected Vice President of the United States of America.

Today’s election decision is an important step forward, however our work is not finished. Our nation, at every level, needs to address the racism that perpetuates discrimination and violence against Black people—and all people of color, including those who are LGBTQ. Until our laws remedy systemic racism and inequality, and our culture catches up to those laws, our movement’s pursuit of LGBTQ equality is far from done.

In the coming weeks and months we look forward to working with the Biden-Harris administration to continue advancing justice for ALL people, including LGBTQ people, and ensuring that America keeps moving forward as a welcoming and affirming country where no American faces discrimination or is denied services simply because of who they are.

We celebrate today, but we will rise in the morning to get back to work.”
