2018 Transgender Day of Remembrance

ABOUT Transgender Day of Remembrance

“The Transgender Day of Remembrance serves several purposes. It raises public awareness of hate crimes against transgender people, an action that current media doesn’t perform. Day of Remembrance publicly mourns and honors the lives of [those] who might otherwise be forgotten. Through the vigil, we express love and respect for our people in the face of national indifference and hatred. Day of Remembrance reminds non-transgender people that we are their [children], parents, friends and lovers. Day of Remembrance gives our allies a chance to step forward with us and stand in vigil, memorializing those of us who’ve died by anti-transgender violence.” From the TDOR website.

Equality Illinois is not involved in the creation of any of the events and developed a list to keep our community engaged. Please visit the facebook event pages for more information regarding these events memorializing the tragic acts of violence against transgender people who have been murdered. Equality Illinois regrets all of the deaths that have occurred in Illinois and across America. In 2018, Dejanay Stanton and Ciara Minaj Frazier were among nearly 30 transwomen murdered in the U.S. right here in Illinois. Equality Illinois has pledged to work with the Chicago Police Department, community organizations working directly with transgender serving organizations, and trans led groups to bring justice to the families of Ciara and Dejanay.
