From Chicago to Carbondale: Protecting the Right to Be

We live in a time where now, more than ever, the right to exist is becoming more and more fragile. Never in my life would I have thought I’d live to see a moment where I, along with my trans siblings, could be labeled a domestic terrorist for simply choosing to be. Regardless of that fact, I, along with Equality Illinois, will not back down.

What we are witnessing goes beyond individual bills or isolated headlines. These aren’t random skirmishes. They are deliberate parts of a larger strategy to create political wedge issues, stoke hate and fear, divide neighbor from neighbor, and push trans people out of public life.

Illinois stands as a reminder that another way is possible. From Chicago to the smallest downstate towns, people of every background have a long history of organizing, marching, and legislating for fairness. Our state has led the nation on inclusive policies, but those protections only matter if we stay vigilant and continue to strengthen them.

We refuse to let the strategy of fear succeed. Our answer must be community: checking in on one another, speaking out when we see injustice, and showing up in every space where decisions are made. Whether that’s at a school board meeting, a city or town council, or the voting booth, every act of solidarity chips away at the fear meant to silence us.

Equality Illinois will keep fighting for dignity, safety, and the freedom to live openly for all LGBTQ+ people and every Illinoisan who values equality. And we invite everyone who believes in those values to stand with us, organize, advocate, and care for each other in ways both large and small.

LGBTQ+ people must stand in solidarity and protect one another so we remain united and strong in the face of these attacks. Today. Tomorrow. Always.
