Equality Illinois is excited about today’s historic election

A statement from Brian C. Johnson, CEO of Equality Illinois, the state’s civil rights organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) Illinoisans:

“We are thrilled Lori Lightfoot might become the first lesbian and African American women to serve as mayor of Chicago – and just the second woman elected to the position. This victory would be historic. Both women and lesbians are severely underrepresented in all levels of government, especially executive positions. While Chicago voters head to the polls, we hope they will remember Lori Lighfoot’s  proven track record of fighting for all communities, it is also an undeniably proud moment for the LGBTQ community, which continues to see this strong leader break down barriers.

“We know Lori Ligthfoot as a true champion of advancing justice and equality for LGBTQ people and all historically marginalized communities. If Lori Ligthfoot wins, we look forward to working with her in this significant leadership role to continue advancing justice in Illinois.
