Statement from Brian C. Johnson, CEO of Equality Illinois
Today’s Supreme Court ruling is a catastrophic failure for our nation’s youth.
Tennessee’s discriminatory ban, upheld by the court today, allows for cisgender youth to access treatments like hormone therapy or surgery that are denied to Trans youth. By allowing this ban on gender-affirming care to stand, the Court has permitted laws that deny Trans young people access to the same trusted, evidence-based medical treatments available to others. Let’s be clear: this decision is not about medicine—it’s about politics. And politicians have absolutely no place in the exam room. Decisions about a child’s health must be made by families and their doctors—not lawmakers.
This ruling gives a green light to extremist politicians who want to insert themselves into deeply personal, private health care decisions—stripping Trans youth of their dignity, autonomy, and the chance to thrive. It is a betrayal of both medical science and basic human decency.
Let us be equally clear: this decision does not impact Illinois. Our state remains a beacon for equality, where children of all identities and their families can access the life-saving care they need without interference. But for families in hostile states, today’s ruling brings fear, grief, and uncertainty.
The science is clear. The medical community is united. Gender-affirming care saves lives. This fight is far from over—and Equality Illinois will never back down. We will continue to protect Trans youth, support their families, and defend every child’s right to grow up with dignity, safety, and love.
To every Trans young person reading this: we see you. We love you. And we will never stop fighting for you.
