FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 7th, 2025
Statement from Equality Illinois CEO Brian C. Johnson in response to Governor Gavin Newsom and other Democratic politicians' denigration of Trans's safety and dignity:

"Democratic leaders: Stop bullying Trans people. You're doing the Republicans' dirty work, and your message is backfiring.

Trans people are not the reason 3 million fewer Americans showed up to the polls in 2024 compared to 2020. If Democrats want to win voters back, they must focus on the issues that matter—like the economy, healthcare, and Supreme Court appointments—instead of attacking a vulnerable group they should be protecting.

Trans people make up just 0.6% of Americans aged 13 and older, yet they suffer disproportionately from harm. More than half of Trans individuals report serious mental illness, and 42% have reported suicidal ideation. Despite this, Republicans have relentlessly targeted Trans people, spending $215 million on attack ads during the 2024 election cycle—accounting for 41% of TV ads in the campaign’s final weeks. GOP-led states continue to push anti-Trans legislation, fueling discrimination and distress.

But here’s the reality: Republican attacks on Trans people didn’t move voters. Polling shows Americans oppose candidates who fixate on restricting Trans rights. In battleground states, anti-Trans ads had no measurable impact on U.S. Senate races or late-deciding voters. The data is clear - attacking Trans folks and their rights is not a winning issue.

When Democratic leaders echo Republican talking points on Trans issues, they fail in two ways. First, they reinforce harmful rhetoric that has real-life consequences—studies show a 72% rise in Trans suicides in states that attempted to pass anti-Trans laws. Second, they betray Democratic values. A pluralistic society is safer, stronger, and more just when it protects and affirms all people, including Trans individuals.

Democrats should be the party of common decency. Attacking Trans people is not only morally wrong—it’s a losing strategy. Instead of pandering to right-wing fearmongering, Democratic leaders must focus on what truly matters: safe communities, a vibrant economy, and strong schools for all Americans. And when opponents or the media try to manufacture controversy over Trans issues, Democrats should stand firm and remind the nation that everyone deserves dignity, safety, and respect."
